چکیده

We describe the use of parametric amplification to substantially increase the magnetoelectric (ME) coefficient of multiferroic cantilevers. Parametric amplification has been widely used in sensors and actuators based on optical, electronic, and mechanical resonators to increase transducer gain. In our system, a microfabricated mechanical cantilever with a magnetostrictive layer is driven at its fundamental resonance frequency by an AC magnetic field. The resulting actuation of the cantilever at the resonance frequency is detected by measuring the voltage across a piezoelectric layer in the same cantilever. Concurrently, the spring constant of the cantilever is modulated at twice the resonance frequency by applying an AC voltage across the piezoelectric layer. The spring constant modulation results in parametric amplification of the motion of the cantilever, yielding a gain in the ME coefficient. Using this method, the ME coefficient was amplified from 33V/ (cmOe) to 2.0 MV/(cmOe), an increase of over 4 orders of magnitude. This boost in the ME coefficient directly resulted in an enhancement of the magnetic field sensitivity of the device from 6.0 nT= ffiffiffiffiffiffi Hz p to 1.0 nT= ffiffiffiffiffiffi Hz p . The enhancement in the ME coefficient and magnetic field sensitivity demonstrated here may be beneficial for a variety actuators and sensors based on resonant multiferroic devices.VC 2015 AIP Publishing LLC. An organic approach for nanostructured multiferroics.

Multiferroics are materials that simultaneously exhibit more than one ferroic order parameters, such as ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism. Recently, multiferroicity has received a significant revival of interest due to the colossal magnetoelectric coupling effect for the development of nano-ferronics. In this mini-review, we focus on a recent study of ferroelectricity, magnet...

Enhanced magnetoelectric effect in heterostructure of magnetostrictive alloy bars and piezoelectric single-crystal transformer.

We report an enhanced magnetoelectric (ME) effect in a heterostructure consisting of a long-type, longitudinally-longitudinally polarized 0.71Pb(Mg(1∕3)Nb(2∕3))O(3)-0.29PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) piezoelectric single-crystal transformer with its input part sandwiched between two longitudinally magnetized Tb(0.3)Dy(0.7)Fe(1.92) (Terfenol-D) magnetostrictive alloy bars. The observed ME effect has two inde...

Capacitively Driven Global Interconnect with Magnetoelectric Switching Based Receiver for Higher Energy Efficiency

We propose capacitively driven low-swing global interconnect circuit using a receiver that utilizes magnetoelectric (ME) effect induced magnetization switching to reduce the energy consumption. Capacitively driven wire has recently been shown to be effective in improving the performance of global interconnects. Such techniques can reduce the signal swing in the interconnect by using a capacitiv...

Spin accumulation in diffusive conductors with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction

We calculate the electrically induced spin accumulation in diffusive systems due to both Rashba (with strength α) and Dresselhaus (with strength β) spin-orbit interaction. Using a diffusion equation approach we find that magnetoelectric effects disappear and that there is thus no spin accumulation when both interactions have the same strength, α = ±β. In thermodynamically large systems, the fin...

Seismic Behavior of 2D Semi-Sine Shaped Hills against Vertically Propagating Incident Waves

This paper presents the preliminary results of an extensive parametric study on seismic response of two-dimensional semi-sine shaped hills to vertically propagating incident P- and SV-waves. Clear perspectives of the induced diffraction and amplification patterns are given by investigation of time-domain and frequency-domain responses. It is shown that site geometry, wave characteristics , and ...
